iPhone 18 Pro and AirPods 5 hit stores today 🛒

Confirmed: iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, Apple Watch Series 12, Apple Watch Ultra 4 and AirPods 5 are available in stores and online worldwide starting today, per Apple Newsroom. Mac mini and Mac Studio follow on Tuesday, September 22.

Pre-orders opened at 5 a.m. PT on Saturday the 12th, so the first deliveries land today. If you skipped the queue, check pickup availability in the Apple Store app before you drive anywhere. Pro Max and the newest finishes are always the first to slip.

Why it matters: launch Friday is the biggest traffic and affiliate day of the quarter. Carrier trade-in deals and AppleCare One upsells are live right now, and a buying guide published today is worth several published next week.

iPhone 18 Pro battery service now costs $129 🔋

Confirmed: Apple's U.S. repair price table now lists $129 for an out-of-warranty battery replacement on iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max. That is $10 more than the $119 it charged on the 16 Pro and 17 Pro. It's the only repair that costs the same on both models, and Apple hasn't said why.

AppleCare+ still covers a battery swap once capacity falls below 80%, which is the number that decides whether the plan pays for itself. Apple inspects the device before confirming the final fee, mail-in can add shipping, and authorized providers set their own prices.

Why it matters: ten dollars sounds trivial, but it's the cleanest hook we have for AppleCare+ and AppleCare One content, and it lands on the exact weekend buyers are deciding at checkout.

macOS 27 Golden Gate is out, and Intel Macs are out with it 💻

Confirmed: macOS 27 Golden Gate went public on September 14. The headline is Siri AI, which now pulls personal context out of Mail, Messages, Notes, Calendar and Photos and can see what's on your screen. Visual Intelligence finally lands on the Mac too, on Command + Shift + Space.

Intel Macs are no longer supported. Golden Gate runs on Apple silicon only, and it's the last release with full Rosetta 2 support. If you're still on an Intel Mac, this is where the road ends.

Why it matters: two evergreen clusters open at once, "is my Mac supported" and "what to do with an Intel Mac in 2026", and Rosetta 2's last stand is a real deadline for anyone still shipping Intel builds.

AirPods 5 vs AirPods 4: which pair to actually buy 🎧

Confirmed: AirPods 5 are $129, or $149 with the Wireless Charging Case, and both models include ANC. That kills the old AirPods 4 split, where only the $179 version had it.

Our pick is the $149 model. Same ANC, but 5 hours per charge instead of 4, and 22 hours with the case instead of 20. Apple claims AirPods 5 cut up to 50% more noise than AirPods 4 with ANC, so treat that as an Apple figure until independent reviews test it. AirPods 4 only make sense now at a steep discount.

Why it matters: this is the highest-intent affiliate question of the weekend, and the answer is unusually clean. One model, one reason, twenty dollars.

Set up iOS 27's new parental controls this weekend 👨‍👧

iOS 27 rebuilt parental controls well past Screen Time. The standout is Ask to Browse, which puts an approval step in front of any new website, and there are now category-based time allowances, flexible schedules, and controls over who your child can message.

It's a fifteen-minute job inside Family Sharing. Most parents won't know the settings moved unless somebody tells them, so tell them.

Why it matters: child safety is the rare Apple story that plays to parents rather than enthusiasts, and this one comes with a clear weekend action attached.

We compared the iPhone Duo with the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra 🥊

Dhruv put Apple's first foldable against Samsung's best one, and the spec sheet doesn't settle it. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra wins on size, with an 8-inch inner display and a 6.5-inch cover screen against the iPhone Duo's 7.6-inch and 5.4-inch.

Folded, though, the Duo is the one you can work one-handed, and its matte inner coating does more for the crease than Samsung's anti-reflective layer. Apple turned up years late and brought a more disciplined product. My read: Samsung wins the spec sheet, Apple wins the week you actually carry it.

Why it matters: this is a page we'll be linking to for months, and it converts the day the Duo goes on sale.

My read this week 🧭

Launch Fridays used to be about the phone. This one is about the bill. Apple moved battery service to $129, put AppleCare One in front of every checkout, and the most useful thing we published all week was a repair price table.

The quieter half of the week was the bigger one. macOS 27 shipped on Monday and closed the door on Intel Macs for good. After years of one more release, that's the end of it, and if you're advising anyone on a Mac purchase this weekend, the math just got a lot simpler.

On the calendar: iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, Apple Watch Series 12, Apple Watch Ultra 4 and AirPods 5 are in stores today, September 18. Mac mini and Mac Studio arrive Tuesday, September 22. macOS 27 Golden Gate has been public since September 14. Still unconfirmed: an on-sale date for the iPhone Duo. Apple hasn't given one, so treat any ship date you see as rumor.
