Two days. That's all that's left before Apple's new CEO walks out for his first keynote, and the foldable iPhone finally stops being a rumor (or doesn't). This is a short pre-event issue: the pre-order date just moved, the foldable picked up a feature nobody expected, and Apple quietly changed the rules for Intel Macs.

2 days to "Surprise and shine": what's actually expected Wednesday 🎬

Confirmed: Apple's event is Wednesday, September 9 at 10 AM PT / 1 PM ET, streaming on Apple.com, YouTube, and the Apple TV app. John Ternus used his first memo as CEO to call it "a huge launch" that's "going to be phenomenal." Not exactly subtle for a guy with a reputation for being unshowy.

Reported (Bloomberg, MacRumors): the lineup is the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max, the foldable "iPhone Ultra", Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4, AirPods 5, plus possibly a new Apple TV 4K and HomePod mini. One late twist: Mark Gurman now says MagSafe is in for the foldable after all, despite the 4.5 mm open thickness. A regular iPhone 18 isn't expected until spring.

Why it matters: if you run a launch, a promo, or an app update around iPhone season, Wednesday 1 PM ET is the moment. The foldable is the story the whole internet will chase, so plan your iPhone 18 Pro content to land in the gap before pre-orders, when attention is high and the Ultra coverage is saturated.

iPhone pre-orders shift to Saturday, September 12 🗓️

Reported (MacRumors, citing Ming-Chi Kuo): pre-orders are expected to open Saturday, September 12 at 12 AM PT / 3 AM ET instead of the usual Friday 5 AM PT slot, because the Friday is the 25th anniversary of 9/11. Apple did the same thing in 2015. Deliveries are expected Friday, September 18. Apple hasn't confirmed any of this yet.

Reported (TrendForce): the foldable could start between $2,099 and $2,299, and the 18 Pro is expected to cost more than the 17 Pro's $1,099. My take: a midnight Saturday pre-order is a very different beast from a Friday morning one, and the early-bird traffic curve will look nothing like last year's.

Why it matters: every carrier promo, trade-in deal, and "pre-order now" email is going to hit at an odd hour on a weekend. If your team schedules around the Friday-morning pattern, fix it now.

Mac mini and Mac Studio got pulled forward by AI demand 🖥️

Reported (The Information): Apple moved up the August refresh of the Mac mini (M6 / M5 Pro) and Mac Studio (M5 Max / M5 Ultra) because companies and AI labs started buying the small desktops in bulk to run models and agents locally. OpenAI reportedly bought tens of thousands of them, and Anthropic reportedly rents Mac minis through AWS. Apple hasn't confirmed the reasoning.

Confirmed: both machines are on pre-order now with deliveries from September 22. Mac mini starts at $899, Mac Studio at $2,499, and Apple's own marketing now calls the mini an "always-on agentic device." Mac revenue was up 28.7% year over year last quarter, which tells you this isn't just a niche.

Why it matters: the Mac just became an enterprise AI product almost by accident. If you sell to developers or run local-AI tooling, the Mac mini is now a legitimate line item in budgets that used to say "GPU cloud."

Mac App Store apps can now drop Intel Macs 💻

Confirmed: a September 1 developer notice lets universal Mac App Store apps that require macOS 13 or later ship future updates as Apple silicon only. It's optional, but once a developer takes it, Intel Macs stay frozen on the last compatible version. This sits on top of macOS 26 Tahoe being the last Intel release and macOS 27 Golden Gate going Apple silicon only this fall.

Also confirmed: Intel Macs will still get security updates for three years, and Rosetta survives through macOS 27 for one more cycle before it's cut back to a subset for old games. If you're on an Apple silicon Mac and still running Intel-only apps, macOS 26.4 will start nagging you about it.

Why it matters: if you ship a Mac app, this is your permission slip to simplify builds and shrink downloads. If you support customers on 2019 Intel MacBooks, the clock is now visibly ticking, and it's worth saying so before the support tickets do.

Apple built (and shelved) an Apple Pencil for the foldable ✏️

Reported (Bloomberg): Apple prototyped a shorter Apple Pencil that snaps magnetically to the side of the foldable iPhone and charges there. It reportedly made the phone awkward to hold, got in the way of opening it, and risked leaving marks on the softer inner display. Gurman says it's unlikely to ship with the phone.

Rumor status: Apple lists Pencil support for iPad only, and nothing about the foldable is confirmed until it's on stage. Still, the fact that Apple got as far as testing one says a lot about how they see a 7.8-inch inner screen: as a mini iPad, not a big phone.

Why it matters: don't build a launch story around "iPhone with Pencil." But if you make note-taking, drawing, or PDF tools, the foldable's inner display is your next platform expansion either way, stylus or not.

My read this week 🧭

It's a strange, quiet Monday before a very loud Wednesday. The pattern of the last few weeks is clear: leaks about the foldable keep getting more specific (MagSafe in, Pencil out, Touch ID, $2,000+), while Apple's actual confirmed news has been about the boring stuff that moves money, like Mac desktops selling out to AI labs and Intel support getting an expiry date. Ternus's first week as CEO was mostly a memo and a promise. Wednesday is where he actually earns the job.

On the calendar: Wed, Sept 9, 10 AM PT / 1 PM ET is confirmed for the event. Sept 22 is confirmed for Mac mini and Mac Studio deliveries. Everything else stays in the expected column: pre-orders Sat, Sept 12 at 12 AM PT, iPhone deliveries Fri, Sept 18, and iOS 27 landing the week after the event (beta 8 dropped last Monday, so the final build is close).
