Change these 33 iPhone settings after the iOS 27 update ⚙️

iOS 27 made a lot of choices for you, and a few of them are not the ones I'd make. Our updated guide walks through 33 settings worth changing on a freshly updated iPhone, from the privacy switches down to the purely cosmetic ones, so you can spend the important ten minutes first and leave the rest for the weekend.

The ones I'd do tonight: turn on Stolen Device Protection, switch off App Tracking and personalized ads, turn on Adaptive Power, and set up Call Screening so unknown numbers get answered by the phone instead of by you. After that comes the fun part: the Action Button, Camera Control, and how hard you want Liquid Glass leaning on transparency.

Why it matters: this is the highest-intent page on the site right now. Everyone who updated in the last ten days is searching some version of this question, and a settings list they actually work through is how an iOS 27 reader turns into a returning one. Worth pinning to the top of the site as well as the top of the issue.

The new Mac mini's storage is sealed for good 💻

Confirmed: the M6 and M5 Pro Mac minis, on sale since September 22, have their NAND soldered straight to the logic board. Expand Mac mini opened both machines and found no SSD slot, and Apple's parts table lists a used SSD module for the 2024 M4 but nothing for these two. The M4 generation brought that module back after three soldered generations. Apple has now taken it away again.

So the number you pick at checkout is the number you live with. The $899 M6 starts at 256GB and goes up to 2TB. The $1,699 M5 Pro starts at 512GB and goes up to 8TB. A Thunderbolt drive will happily hold your photo library, it just won't grow the internal disk.

Why it matters: the aftermarket upgrade path was the reason to buy the cheap tier and sort it out later. That reason is gone, so the average selling price climbs without a single number changing on Apple's page. If you sell, review or recommend Macs, capacity is now the whole conversation.

Compare the two Mac minis before you spend $899 🛒

Confirmed: the M6 has a 12-core CPU and a 12-core GPU, up to 32GB of unified memory, Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and 2.5Gb Ethernet as standard. Apple claims up to 40% faster CPU performance and up to twice the graphics performance of the M4, plus a dual 16-core Neural Engine for local AI work.

The M4 is still selling at $799, so the real gap is $100, not the $300 the launch prices suggest. My take: take the M6 if you edit video, run models locally, or plan to keep the machine five years. If it's browsing, mail and a couple of documents, the M4 does that just as well, and I'd put the $100 straight into a bigger drive, which matters a lot more this generation than last.

Why it matters: the storage tier is where the margin sits now, so expect Apple and the big retailers to push the mid configurations hard this quarter. Anyone writing buying copy or running affiliate placements should lead with capacity rather than chip.

Apple closed the road back to iOS 26 on September 21 🚪

Confirmed: Apple stopped signing iOS 26.6.2 on September 21, so an iPhone running iOS 27 can no longer be restored to iOS 26 by any official route. Aaron Perris spotted the change. Every install checks with Apple first, which means a saved IPSW sitting on your desk does nothing once the signature is pulled.

iOS 26.7 is not a way around it. Apple published a restore image for iPadOS 26.7 but never one for the iPhone, so if you are already on 27 there is nothing to restore to. If you are still on iOS 26 and hesitating, that is the actual decision in front of you. Updating is a one-way trip now.

Why it matters: this is Apple's usual rhythm, a week or two after a major release, so nobody in the industry should be surprised. It does change the support conversation. Anyone stuck on an iOS 27 bug is now waiting for 27.1, and every reader searching for a downgrade this week lands on the same answer.

Apple is testing an iPhone that locks itself when snatched 🔒

Reported: code in iOS 27.2 beta 2 points to an internal system called AutoLock that watches for a phone being grabbed out of your hand. Apple has not announced it, and the part that would actually lock the screen is switched off in this beta, so there is no toggle to go hunting for in Settings.

The design is careful about false alarms. A sharp acceleration, a paired Apple Watch dropping off, a long loss of network, or a screen left unlocked past a set interval can each request a lock. A successful Face ID check, a workout or gaming app in the foreground, or being on your home Wi-Fi can veto it. Android has had Theft Detection Lock for a while, and Apple is aiming at the same few seconds.

Why it matters: Find My and Stolen Device Protection both assume the phone was locked when it left your hand. Street theft mostly does not work that way. If AutoLock ships, it is Apple's first answer to the unlocked grab, and it is exactly the kind of feature carriers and device insurers put in their own marketing.

See what iOS 27 actually changed in Screen Time ⏳

Ava went through the rebuilt Screen Time this week and came back with a verdict I did not expect: it is finally usable on yourself. Schedules let you set a different limit for a Tuesday and a Saturday instead of one blanket number. Time Allowances give you a budget to spend when you want, rather than a wall you hit at the same moment every evening.

My own read: Apple spent years shipping this as a parental control and hoping adults would point it at themselves. The old version failed because ignoring it cost you nothing, one tap and the limit was gone. A budget you can watch draining works on me in a way a hard wall never did.

Why it matters: digital wellbeing features have been marketing garnish since 2018. If Apple has built one that adults actually leave switched on, that shifts what an app has to do to hold attention, and it shifts what engagement numbers look like on iPhone next year.

My read this week 🧭

Three of this week's stories rhyme. Apple soldered the Mac mini's storage back down, closed the iPhone's road back to iOS 26, and shipped iOS 27 with defaults most people will never go looking for. Each one narrows what you can undo after you buy, or after you tap Update. Apple has done all of this before, and none of it is dramatic on its own. It is also why the settings list leads this week: it is the one place where you still get to push back.

The wearables reporting is the part I am actually watching. Bloomberg says the camera-equipped AI pendant is on hold with no reason given, and separately that Apple is testing a screenless fitness band aimed at Whoop. Put those next to the Home Hub report and Apple's non-iPhone hardware for next year looks unsettled in a way it has not for a while. All three are reports, none of them carry a date, and I am not treating any as a plan yet.

On the calendar: iPhone Duo pre-orders open October 16 and it ships October 23 from $1,999, both confirmed by Apple. Staying in rumor territory: the AI pendant, the Whoop rival, the Home Hub launch window, and AutoLock, which is real code in a beta with no ship date attached to it.
