Check iPhone Duo pickup on Saturday, not at the store today 📱

Confirmed: iPhone Duo goes on sale today, but Apple's US online store has shown January 25 delivery for every configuration since half an hour after pre-orders opened. Reported (MacRumors): store staff were told there will likely be no walk-in stock today. Apple's site says to check back on Saturday, October 24 for pickup, and it doesn't promise any.

If you want one this year, open the Apple Store app on Saturday and check your carrier too, since Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile and Best Buy took their own orders. Mark Gurman called the early pre-orders a "major mistake", and I agree. Taking $1,999 orders you can't fill until late January frustrates the exact people Apple wants as early fans.

Once yours arrives, look for Apple's new Made for iPhone Duo badge in the App Store. Only apps built with the iOS 27.1 SDK fill the 7.6-inch inner screen. Older ones show black bars on both sides.

Why it matters: for app teams, the badge is the new shelf. Apple's Duo collections go live today, and the badge comes from submitting iPhone Duo screenshots in App Store Connect.

Hold off on an iPad mini until Apple's October 28 event 🎤

Confirmed: Apple's "Pro and tell" event is Wednesday, October 28 at 10 AM PT (1 PM ET) in Los Angeles. The date, time, city and tagline are all Apple has said.

Reported (Bloomberg): a touchscreen MacBook Pro with an OLED display, a Dynamic Island and M5 Pro and M5 Max chips, plus an OLED iPad mini that could cost close to $799, up from $599 today. An unreleased iPad mini case on Apple's regulatory site hints at a new design.

My advice: don't buy an iPad mini, or a case for one, this week. Five days is a short wait, and a redesign could change which cases fit.

Why it matters: accessory makers should hold iPad mini case stock until the dimensions are public. Gurman has floated November 6 as an on-sale date for the MacBook Pro. Plan launch content around it, but treat it as rumor.

Try Apple's new AI assistant in Pages, Keynote and Numbers 🧠

Confirmed: Apple is rolling out Intelligent Assistant in beta. It drafts and rewrites sections in Pages, builds slides and presenter notes in Keynote, and writes formulas from plain English in Numbers. You need Apple Creator Studio ($12.99 a month or $129 a year), US English, and an Apple Intelligence iPhone or iPad on iOS 27. The Mac apps haven't been updated yet.

Numbers is where I'd start. Describe the calculation, get a working formula back. That's the kind of AI feature people still use after the first week. If you don't pay for Creator Studio, the free apps work as before, and Keynote's new open .keyx format is in beta for everyone.

Why it matters: Apple now sells AI inside its office apps as a subscription. For productivity brands, Creator Studio is a direct rival on iPhone and iPad, with a $129 yearly price to plan against.

Choose between HomePod mini 2 and Echo Studio before October 30 🔊

The HomePod mini 2 is $149 and hits stores October 30. Amazon's Echo Studio (2025) is $219.99, adds Dolby Atmos, and works as a Zigbee, Thread and Matter hub. Ravi's comparison boils it down to your phone: the mini 2 needs an iPhone or iPad to set up, while the Echo works with Android too.

I'd buy the mini 2 for an iPhone household, but not for Siri AI. Apple hasn't dated that update, while Alexa+ is live today (free with Prime, $19.99 a month without). Buy it for what it does on day one.

Why it matters: smart home brands should certify for Matter and Thread, the common ground between the two. Only the Echo has Zigbee built in.

Turn on Adaptive Power if your iPhone shipped with it off 🔋

Adaptive Power trims battery use in the background on iPhone 15 Pro and newer. It's on by default on iPhone 17 models, iPhone Air, iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone Duo, but off on iPhone 16, 16e and 15 Pro. Go to Settings, Battery, Power Mode and switch it on.

It needs about seven days to learn your charging habits, so turn it on today rather than the night before a trip. With it on, Low Power Mode also kicks in by itself at 20%.

Why it matters: Adaptive Power can dim the screen and limit background activity during heavy use. App teams should test background tasks with it switched on.

My read this week 🧭

Apple wanted the Duo on sale inside its holiday quarter, and buyers got a January date in return. I'd rather Apple had waited a few weeks and shipped on time. Next week is busier: a Mac and iPad event, the HomePod mini 2, and iOS 27.2, which MacRumors expects to ship for every iPhone. iOS 27.1 went final on Thursday, but only for the Duo.

On the calendar: Oct 24, Duo pickup availability (Apple Store app). Oct 28, "Pro and tell" at 10 AM PT. Oct 30, HomePod mini 2 in stores and the Duo in 28 more countries. Nov 13, HomeView and the new Apple TV 4K ship. Expected: iOS 27.2 next week. Rumor: touchscreen OLED MacBook Pro (possibly on sale Nov 6) and an OLED iPad mini near $799.
