Get your iPhone Duo order ready on Monday 📱

Confirmed: Apple's "Get ready" step for the iPhone Duo opens Monday, October 12, in the Apple Store app and on apple.com. You choose color, storage, carrier and payment ahead of time, so you check out faster when pre-orders open on Friday, October 16 at 5 AM PT (8 AM ET). The Duo starts at $1,999 and lands in stores October 23.

I'd do it. It costs nothing, and a first-generation foldable with tight launch supply is exactly where a slow checkout pushes your delivery date out by weeks. While you wait, sort out a screen protector for both displays, since the Duo's two screens make that a bigger decision than usual.

Why it matters: Friday at 5 AM PT is when Duo demand shows up as real orders. If you sell cases or accessories, that's when your listings need to be live and in stock.

Set an alarm for Apple's October 13 home event 🏠

Confirmed: Greg Joswiak posted "Welcome home. October 13." on Thursday, and Apple has invited press to an in-person event in New York at 9 AM ET / 6 AM PT on Tuesday. No product list yet, and no promise of a livestream.

Reported: Bloomberg says a home hub with a screen, a new HomePod mini and an updated Apple TV are coming. MacRumors expects a second batch in the last week of October, likely Macs. Treat all of it as rumor until Tuesday.

If a HomePod mini or Apple TV is on your holiday list, wait four days. Buying the current model this weekend is the purchase you're most likely to regret.

Why it matters: A home hub would put Siri AI on the kitchen counter. Smart home brands should note which accessories Apple shows on stage, because that's the list Home users will shop from.

Check your watch fit if the new sensor leaves a red mark ⌚

Reported: Some Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4 owners describe burning and redness under the sensor, in posts MacRumors collected from its forums and Reddit. Apple hasn't confirmed a sensor problem, and nobody knows yet how common it is.

Apple's own wearing advice points at fit and moisture: keep the watch, band and wrist clean and dry, especially after workouts, and adjust a band that's too tight or too loose. If you see redness or swelling, Apple says to talk to a doctor before wearing it again. If you're still inside your return window and it keeps happening, I'd use it.

Why it matters: Health sensing is the whole pitch for this generation. Fitness and health apps built on Apple Watch data should expect comfort questions from users, not just accuracy ones.

Don't mail in your MacBook Pro for Microsoft's $1,000 yet 💻

Confirmed: Microsoft will pay up to $1,000 for an eligible MacBook Pro when you buy the $2,599 Surface Laptop Ultra from its own store in the US or Canada. The offer runs through November 23 and the laptop ships October 16.

The fine print matters. It's cash back after an inspection, the amount depends on condition, and a cracked screen or a missing charger can take it to zero. With new Macs reportedly due in late October, I'd wait a few weeks and compare what Apple ships before sending anything off.

Why it matters: Microsoft is going after Mac power users by name with a local AI pitch. A trade-in offer aimed at one rival's laptop tells you where the PC side thinks Apple is exposed.

Turn your AirPods into a live translator 🎧

Live Translation works on AirPods Pro 2 and 3, AirPods 4 with ANC, AirPods 5 and AirPods Max 2, paired with an iPhone 15 Pro or later. Start by downloading both languages under your AirPods in Settings, then start a session from the Translate app, by holding both stems, or by asking Siri.

It works on Phone and FaceTime calls too. The tip worth stealing from our walkthrough: in a noisy room, hold your iPhone closer to the other person so its mics help. Apple warns translations can be wrong, so double-check anything that matters.

Why it matters: Ten languages, processed on device once downloaded. Travel and hospitality teams should assume some customers already have a translator in their ears.

My read this week 🧭

October is turning into Apple's second launch season, and only one of next week's dates comes with a price tag. My advice: don't buy anything Apple makes for the home or the desk until Apple has had its say. The Duo is the exception if you already know you want one, because supply, not price, will decide who has one on the 23rd.

On the calendar: Mon Oct 12, iPhone Duo Get ready opens. Tue Oct 13, Apple's home event at 9 AM ET. Fri Oct 16, Duo pre-orders at 5 AM PT, and Surface Laptop Ultra ships. Fri Oct 23, iPhone Duo in stores. Late October, Mac Studio with 512GB of unified memory. Nov 2, Apple's Q4 earnings. Nov 23, Microsoft's trade-in offer ends.

Still rumor: the home hub, HomePod mini and Apple TV for October 13, and a late-October Mac batch.
