Apple just set a market share record πŸ“ˆ

Apple grew iPhone shipments 3% year over year in Q2 2026, capturing a record 20% of global smartphone shipments while the overall market slowed, per Counterpoint. The iPhone 17 stayed the world's best-shipping smartphone, and Apple was the only major brand that didn't raise prices despite the memory shortage.

Samsung reclaimed the #1 spot with 24% on Galaxy S26 momentum, and China remained Apple's soft spot. With shipments forecast to fall ~14% industry-wide this year, holding a record share in a shrinking market is the real story.

Two new Apple Pencils are in the works ✏️

Apple is reportedly developing replacements for both the USB-C Apple Pencil and the Pencil Pro (codenames B582 and B632), timed for the 2027 iPad Pro lineup, per Bloomberg's Mark Gurman.

Most interesting angle: new EU battery rules kicking in February 2027 generally require user-replaceable batteries, and Gurman says Apple is working on "new battery systems" to comply. A repairable Apple Pencil would be a first; today's sealed design gives you zero options when the battery ages.

Apple takes OpenAI to court βš–οΈ

Apple has sued OpenAI, alleging it misappropriated AI hardware trade secrets through former Apple employees. The complaint names ex-executive Tang Tan and ex-engineer Chang Liu, claiming candidates interviewing at OpenAI were encouraged to discuss unreleased products, and some were even asked to bring hardware components to interviews.

Apple wants damages, destruction of any proprietary materials, and possible product redesigns. OpenAI flatly denies it all, saying it has no interest in other companies' trade secrets. Apple says it tried to settle privately first and got silence back.

The foldable iPhone is getting serious cooling ❄️

A new leak claims Apple has ramped up vapor chamber orders, with the foldable iPhone first in line, the same laser-welded cooling tech that gives the iPhone 17 Pro up to 40% better sustained performance. The order may also cover the 20th-anniversary iPhones expected in 2027.

It makes sense: cramming a powerful chip, two displays, and a hinge into an ultra-thin body leaves heat nowhere to go. One caveat: the claim comes from a single leaker with no order totals or supplier names, so file under promising but unproven.

Ads are coming to Apple Maps, with a banned list πŸ—ΊοΈ

Apple Maps ads roll out in the US and Canada later this summer, and Apple just published who's not invited: plumbers, electricians, HVAC, roofers, locksmiths, pest control, bail bond companies, and crypto ATMs. That's a sharp contrast to Google Maps, which happily takes home-service ad money.

Apple says sponsored listings will be clearly labeled, your Maps activity won't be linked to your Apple Account for advertising, and no ad profiles will be built or shared.
