Apple joins the $5 trillion club 📈

Apple briefly crossed a $5 trillion market cap on Tuesday, becoming only the second public company ever to do it, after Nvidia. It was the first to $1T, $2T, and $3T, stumbled at $4T, and has now clawed back to the summit.

The timing is loaded: the milestone landed days before Apple's July 30 earnings, and right as a huge leadership shift approaches. Tim Cook becomes Executive Chairman on September 1, with John Ternus taking over as CEO. Whether Apple holds the crown depends on earnings and what comes next.

You can now lease an iPhone like a car 🚗

Apple Upgrade is officially live in the US: a Klarna-backed leasing program with payments from $17.99/mo for iPhone, $11.99 for Apple Watch and iPad, and $24.99 for Mac. A soft credit check gets you in, and at the end you return it, swap it, or pay a fee to keep it.

The catch worth shouting: you don't own the device, AppleCare isn't included, and ending early means paying out the remaining term. Apple's own example: a 256GB iPhone 17 Pro runs $31.99/mo x 24 = $767.76, and it still belongs to Klarna.

Apple may charge you for heavy Siri use 🤖

On the earnings call, Tim Cook signaled Apple may offer iCloud+ upgrades for heavy Apple Intelligence users, its way of recouping the real cost of running AI in the cloud. Basic access stays included; power users would pay for more server-side requests.

It's not a Siri subscription, at least not yet: think higher usage caps bundled into pricier iCloud+ tiers. Cook stressed nothing's final, no prices, no limits, no confirmed plans. But the direction is clear as the rebuilt iOS 27 Siri leans harder on the cloud.

Apple's smart home hub finally has a launch window 🏠

Apple's long-rumored smart home hub could arrive between October 2026 and early 2027, per Bloomberg's Mark Gurman. Think a 7-inch display plus a HomePod-style speaker, running a new tvOS-based system, coming in both tabletop and wall-mounted versions for the kitchen, bedroom, or hallway.

The clever part: it uses facial recognition to spot who's in front of it and surface your calendar, reminders, and widgets automatically, even resizing on-screen elements as you walk closer. Siri runs the whole show, and Apple's reportedly building a Ring-style indoor camera to go with it.
