πŸ›‘ These Apple Products will be discontinued soon!

iPhone 15 Pro Series:
Apple has been gradually discontinuing its iPhone Pro series each year. The iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max will be phased out once the iPhone 16 Pro series is released on the official website.

iPhone 14 Plus: Apple's first 6.7-inch non-pro model might also be discontinued. It was launched as a replacement for the iPhone 13 mini, aimed at users who prefer bigger screens and longer battery life.

iPhone 13: Apple discontinued the iPhone 12 last year and is expected to discontinue the iPhone 13 this year. This change will make the base iPhone 14 the new entry-level option for budget-friendly iPhones.

Apple Watch Ultra 2: It will be replaced by Ultra 3, which reportedly has a similar design to its predecessor.

Apple Watch Series 9 / SE 2: The Apple Watch Series 9 will likely be discontinued in favor of the new Series 10. The Apple Watch SE 2 might also be phased out if the SE 3 is introduced, possibly with a lightweight plastic case.

AirPods 2: The second-generation AirPods with wireless charging, launched in 2019, might soon be discontinued. Apple could also release a new version of the AirPods 4 while keeping the AirPods 3 as the entry-level option.

iPad 10: iPad 10, introduced in 2022, might be discontinued if a new entry-level iPad is launched at the Glowtime event.

iPad Mini 6: The iPad Mini 6, released in 2021, is expected to be discontinued once the iPad Mini 7 is launched.

🀯 We don't buy iPhones because of new features

Ahead of the iPhone 16 event next week, CIRP is out with a new report to answer the question, "What compels new iPhone purchases?" This study is based on feedback from iPhone buyers from June 2023 to 2024.

Interestingly, only 18% of respondents said new features were a reason to buy a new iPhone, and this is what matters most in convincing customers to upgrade.

The survey allowed respondents to share open-ended answers, and then CIRP sorted the data into these six categories:

  • The old phone was obsolete
  • Old phone was lost, broken, or stolen
  • Wanted the newest features
  • Carrier financial incentive
  • Improve network quality, including upgrade to 5G
  • Friends and family have iPhone

The most popular reason (44% of respondents) was their current phone had become "obsolete."

The second most popular reason to buy a new iPhone, with 29% of answers, was a lost, broken, or stolen smartphone.

Just under one-fifth of respondents said new features were the reason to spend money on a new iPhone, with carrier incentives, network, and friends/family having an iPhone making up 9% of the total.

⌨️ Apple is working on a new Magic Keyboard for iPad

According to Mark Gurman’s Power On newsletter, Apple is testing a new lower-end Magic Keyboard for the base model iPad and new iPad Air.

Unlike the new Magic Keyboard introduced on the iPad Pro lineup in May, this cheaper Magic Keyboard won’t include a premium-feeling aluminum top case. It'll likely use the same cheaper silicone material as the old iPad Magic Keyboards.

This new Magic Keyboard will likely succeed both the Magic Keyboard Folio (introduced in 2022 with the iPad 10) and the older Magic Keyboard for the iPad Air (introduced in 2020 with the iPad Pros). It’ll also reportedly include a function row, something that’d be new to the Magic Keyboard for iPad Air.

Gurman expects the keyboard to be released around mid-2025 if all goes according to plan.

If Apple follows this strategy, it will undoubtedly simplify its iPad Keyboard lineup. They already started by discontinuing the old Smart Keyboards, which still used butterfly switches!

πŸ’» Apple Likely to Launch M4 Macs in November

According to a reliable source familiar with the matter, Apple will release new Mac models in November 2024. While new Macs are usually released toward the end of the year, this is the first time a launch month has been singled out for the upcoming M4 Macs.

Rumors suggest that Apple has plans to launch four new Mac models with M4-series chips before the end of the year:

- An entry-level 14-inch MacBook Pro with the M4 chip
- New 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pro models with the M4 Pro and M4 Max chips
- A new β€ŒiMacβ€Œ with the M4 chip
- And a completely redesigned Mac mini with the M4 and M4 Pro chips.

With the exception of the new Mac mini, these devices are expected to be minor refreshes that focus on chip upgrades. For the first time, they could come with 16GB of memory as standard across the board. Some of these machines are now believed to be in mass production, which may lead to a November release date.

πŸ”₯ Bluetooth 6.0 will help Apple improve its Find My network

The Bluetooth SIG has published an article detailing everything that's new about Bluetooth 6.0. One of the highlights is Bluetooth Channel Sounding, which is described as an innovation that brings "true distance awareness."

Find My solutions can be greatly improved with Bluetooth 6.0, as it unlocks "centimeter-level accuracy over considerable distances." In other words, Bluetooth 6.0 is expected to provide the exact distance between devices.

Since Apple’s Find My network is based on Bluetooth, improved distance awareness technology will help users find their lost devices more easily.

Apple currently relies on ultra-wideband technology to precisely measure the distance between devices.

Bluetooth Channel Sounding also adds an extra layer of security for authentication, which is useful for digital keys. In addition, Bluetooth 6.0 can transmit larger data frames and enable lower latency for audio applications.

Given that the new protocol has just been announced, it may take at least a year or two before we see the first devices equipped with the new version of Bluetooth.
