πŸ“² This is The New iPhone Lineup Following iPhone 16 Launch

Following the launch of the iPhone 16 lineup, Apple has now discontinued iPhone 13, one of the oldest iPhones at the bottom of their lineup, as well as the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max.

This leaves the iPhone SE as the oldest iPhone in the lineup, which should get its refresh in a couple months.

The iPhone lineup now consists of the following models, each serving a unique position in the pricing ladder:

  • iPhone SE 3 – $429
  • iPhone 14 – $599
  • iPhone 14 Plus – $699
  • iPhone 15 – $699
  • iPhone 15 Plus – $799
  • iPhone 16 – $799
  • iPhone 16 Plus – $899
  • iPhone 16 Pro – $999
  • iPhone 16 Pro Max – $1199

This now means the majority of Apple’s iPhone lineup comes with USB-C.

So which iPhone should you buy?

Don’t buy an iPhone SE since it’ll be refreshed in 6 months. Get the iPhone 14 if you want the cheapest modern iPhone and can't wait for the SE 4, get the iPhone 15 if you want USB-C on a budget.

Get the 16 if you want Apple Intelligence on a budget, and get the iPhone 16 Pro if you want the best of the best.

πŸ“² iPhone 16 Lineup Delivers Apple Intelligence, Bold Colors, and Quick Camera Controls

Apple's iPhone 16 series features a practical Camera Control sensor, useful Al features, and new color options.

Bold Colors: In addition to basic black and white, the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus come in three fun colors: pink, teal, and ultramarine. All three colors are more vibrant than the muted tones of the iPhone 15 lineup, and they look nice in person. The phones feature a two-tone, dual-finish design. The back has a matte finish in a slightly lighter hue that nicely contrasts the brighter, polished metal edges.

New Pro Colors: The iPhone 16 Pro models also feature a two-tone look but more muted color options, including black titanium, desert titanium, natural titanium, and white titanium. Desert titanium is the standout for me because of its shiny golden edges, even if the tan color on the back is sort of meh.

Display:
The iPhone 16 and 16 Plus feature stunning 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch OLED displays. The iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max offer even larger screens at 6.3 inches and 6.9 inches, respectively. With a ProMotion Super Retina XDR display and 120Hz adaptive refresh rate, the Pro models deliver a smoother, more immersive experience, complemented by Apple’s claim of the thinnest bezels for a true full-screen view.

Camera App Upgrades: You can use Apple Intelligence to erase photobombers in your pictures with a couple of taps. As well, finding a specific photo or video in your library will be a lot easier with Apple Intelligence. For known faces (and pets!), the search field supports complex queries such as "Maya playing trumpet," for instance.

Quick Camera Control: The iPhone 16 lineup features a new physical Camera Control sensor on the right edge of the case. Press it once to launch the Camera app, then press it again to snap a photo or hold it to record a video. It works in both horizontal and vertical formats and makes it quick to start snapping photos or videos.

Built for Apple Intelligence: Artificial Intelligence has been the biggest tech trend of the year, and Apple is taking part with its latest smartphones. In the demo room at the Glowtime event, we saw useful Apple Intelligence features integrated within the Mail, Notes, and Photos apps.

⌚️ Apple Watch Series 10 is Slimmer and More Comfortable Than Ever

The Series 10 is thinner than its predecessor, with a bigger screen and a new polished aluminum option.

Aluminum Case Option: The Apple Watch Series 10 has a new jet-black polished aluminum case option. Previously, aluminum Apple Watches had a matte finish. The polished aluminum offers the look of shiny stainless steel without the price increase. The aluminum model also comes in matte rose gold or brushed silver.

A Thinner Case: The Series 10 thinner design makes it more comfortable to wear for sleep tracking. We noticed that the Series 10's case itself, and the sensor that protrudes off the back, are both slimmer than the last generation.

Two Case Sizes: The Series 10 comes in two case sizes: 42mm and 46mm, up from 41mm and 45mm last generation, and the corners are rounder.

Digital Crown: The digital crown on the Series 10 is also slightly thinner than its predecessor from last generation, and no longer has a red accent ring, a hallmark of previous Apple Watch models. We never really liked the medical look of the red accent ring on the digital crown, anyway.

Audio Playback Capabilities: The Series 10 allows for audio playback through the internal speaker for the first time. It doesn't get super loud, but you should have no trouble hearing it with the volume at max in an otherwise quiet environment.

🎧 AirPods 4 With Noise Cancellation Work Better Than You'd Expect

Will Double As A Hearing Aid: Instead of announcing the AirPods Pro 3, Apple announced its existing AirPods Pro 2 ($249) will soon be capable of acting as a hearing aid. The new hearing health-related features will arrive in the form of software updates this fall. If you buy the AirPods Pro today, they will ship immediately without the hearing features.

New H2 Chip: The entry-level AirPods 4 ($129) feature Apple's H2 chip. Also new to the AirPods 4 models is gesture-based Siri communication (nod for yes or shake head for no when Siri asks questions) and a redesigned enclosure with a narrower oval-shaped grille than the previous model.

The Real Showstopper: The AirPods 4 with ANC for $179 is our favorite new AirPods. The tiny charging case for the ANC model has been upgraded, and it now supports wireless charging and adds speakers for audible Find My support. Sonically, the drivers deliver a solid bass response and solid overall balance with the highs. Plus, somewhat surprisingly, the ANC works quite well.

Adaptive Mode: Adaptive mode combines the ANC and Transparency modes. It successfully dialed back the crowd noise, but it also tamped down the voice of the person speaking, which rather defeats the purpose of this mode.

Transparency Mode: Another nice surprise, transparency mode actually did something useful. The AirPods 4's blend of open design and Transparency mode sounded natural, and we can see people finding it useful in certain scenarios.

AIRPODS MAX New Colors: The AirPods Max ($549) are now available in five colors: blue, midnight, orange, purple, and starlight. The orange is definitely a look that will stand out, as is the purple, while the blue, midnight, and starlight models feel a bit more typical. The two-tone sheen and feel of the metal have a familiar look and will pair nicely with a new iPhone 16 or MacBook Pro.

AIRPODS MAX USB-C Charging: Apple has upgraded the connection port on its AirPods Max to USB-C, which is certainly an improvement over the old Lightning port and puts the headphones in line with the rest of Apple's products. Even the visible internal pieces of the port are color-matched to the headphones.

😣 These iPhone 16 Features Won't Be Ready At Launch

Apple announced a feature-packed iPhone 16 lineup. However, certain features that will be missing when the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 arrive next week.

Camera Control's two-stage shutter:
One of the tentpole features of the iPhone 16 lineup is a new physical button that powers Camera Control. With Camera Control, you can quickly access the iPhone 16’s Camera, slide to zoom in and out, and press to snap a photo.

But later this year, a new two-stage shutter is coming that will enable even more.

Later this year, Camera Control will introduce a two-stage shutter that lets you automatically lock focus and exposure with a light press β€” so you can reframe your shot without losing focus on your subject.

New Siri:
Apple’s new Siri inspired the artwork for the company’s 'It's Glowtime' event.

Even though the iPhone 16 comes equipped with iOS 18, it will have the existing Siri at launch. That's because the new, glow-y and more intelligent Siri won't arrive until iOS 18.1 with Apple Intelligence.

Visual Intelligence:
Here's another Camera Control feature that won't be ready at launch.
Visual Intelligence (not to be confused with Apple Intelligence) is a feature that uses the Camera to learn about places and objects in the real world.

Genmoji, AI notifications, and all other Apple Intelligence features:
No Apple Intelligence features will be included when the iPhone 16 first releases.

These anticipated AI features will be missing:

  • Genmoji
  • AI notification summaries
  • Clean Up in the Photos app
  • Powerful writing tools
  • ChatGPT integration

πŸ“Έ What is iPhone 16 Camera Control Button And How It Works?

The iPhone 16 lineup, featuring the all-new Camera Control button, is finally here. This addition, highlighted during Apple’s 2024 Glowtime event, complements the advanced camera system and new Apple Intelligence features of the iPhone 16 lineup.

For those unfamiliar, the iPhone 16 Camera Control button not only gives you quick access to the camera but also lets you navigate its settings and access some of the Visual Intelligence features with simple gestures.

Let's take a look at how the iPhone 16 Camera Control button works and how to use it.

πŸ”₯ How Much Faster The iPhone 16's A18 Chip Is?

A new round of iPhones means a new round of Apple Silicon benchmarks, and we've just gotten our first look at a Geekbench result for the A18 chip, showcasing modest performance gains.

The result, uploaded to Geekbench, showcases around a 10% boost in single core performance compared to the A17 Pro, which is about in line with expectations. When unveiling the A18 chip, Apple avoided direct comparisons with the A17 chip.

Interestingly, the multi-core result seems to be quite low, with a comparable score to the A16 Bionic chip, and around 8% slower than the A17 Pro chip.

It's safe to assume that this is likely an anomaly, as Apple says that the A18 chip should be around 30% faster than the A16 chip in iPhone 15.

This Geekbench result comes from an iPhone17,3 model – and that identifier corresponds to the iPhone 16, rather than the Plus, Pro, or Pro Max. So ideally, this is the worst that it'll get, and there'll likely be even more promising results from the A18 Pro chip.
