Apple is planning major updates for the iPhone 17 lineup, with a focus on the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max. While most rumors have centered on the iPhone 17 Air, new details reveal significant design shifts across the entire range. Key Changes to Expect:
Aluminum Frame: The entire iPhone 17 lineup will switch to an aluminum frame, moving away from titanium in the Pro models. The reason behind this change is still unclear.
Rectangular camera bump: On a related note, the devices are expected to have a "larger rectangular camera bump" made of aluminum.
A19 Pro chip: iPhone 17 Pro models are expected to use Apple's next-generation A19 Pro chip, which will reportedly be manufactured with TSMC's newer third-generation 3nm process. Like usual, expect modest year-over-year performance gains and power efficiency improvements compared to the current iPhones.
Apple-designed Wi-Fi 7 chip: At least one iPhone 17 model is rumored to get a Wi-Fi 7 chip designed by Apple rather than Broadcom.
24-megapixel front camera: All four iPhone 17 models are said to feature an upgraded 24-megapixel front-facing camera, whereas all iPhone 16 models are equipped with a 12-megapixel front-facing camera.
48-megapixel rear Telephoto camera: An upgraded 48-megapixel Telephoto camerais rumored for the iPhone 17 Pro models, up from the 12-megapixel Telephoto camera on iPhone 16 Pro models.
12GB of RAM: An increased 12GB of RAM was initially rumored exclusively for the iPhone 17 Pro Max, but later the iPhone 17 Pro as well. This upgrade should help to improve the performance of Apple Intelligence and multitasking. All four iPhone 16 models have 8GB of RAM.
A smaller Dynamic Island for iPhone 17 Pro Max: A change rumored exclusively for the iPhone 17 Pro Max is a "much narrowed Dynamic Island," as a result of Apple adopting a "metalens" for the Face ID system.
Questions Raised:
Why is Apple moving to aluminum frames after recently switching to titanium for the Pro models?
How much larger will the camera bumps be, and what other design changes might be in store?
With the iPhone 17 Air scaling back its camera features, will the Pro models emphasize advanced camera capabilities even more?
The changes raise questions about the future of Apple's design strategy, and the decision between the ultra-slim 17 Air and the camera-focused Pro models could be a tough choice for iPhone fans in 2025.

Apple is facing challenges with the iPhone 17 Air's ultra-thin design. According to The Information, engineers are struggling to fit the battery and thermal materials into the device, which could impact its overall performance.
Thickness: The iPhone 17 Air will be thinner than previous models, with prototypes ranging between 5-6mm thick. For comparison:
iPhone 6: 6.9mm
iPhone 16: 7.80mm
iPhone 16 Pro Max: 8.25mm
11-inch M4 iPad Pro: 5.4mm
Audio: Due to its slim profile, the iPhone 17 Air will feature only one earpiece speaker, unlike current models with dual speakers.
Camera: The device will have a single rear camera housed in a large, centered camera bump.
5G: The iPhone 17 Air will be among the first to use Apple’s in-house 5G modem, but it will lack mmWave 5G support and may not perform as well as Qualcomm’s 5G chips.
SIM Card: Apple engineers are still working on how to fit a physical SIM card tray into the device, particularly for markets like China.
Production: The iPhone 17 Air is currently in early production trials at Foxconn, recently moving from proto-1 to proto-2.
Stay tuned for more updates as Apple finalizes the design and production of its next-generation iPhone!
4. Everything We Know About Apple's 5G Modem
Apple has been working on its own 5G modem for years, but development has taken longer than expected. However, recent reports suggest that Apple's first 5G modem could arrive next year. Here’s what we know so far: Background on Apple’s 5G Modem:
Acquisition: In 2019, Apple acquired Intel’s modem division for $1 billion to develop its own cellular modems, aiming to reduce reliance on Qualcomm.
Delays: Despite this, progress has been slow. Early prototypes faced issues like slower speeds and overheating, making them less effective than Qualcomm’s 5G chips.
What’s Next for Apple’s 5G Modem:
Launch Date: Apple plans to introduce its first 5G modem in 2025. The first devices with this modem are expected to be the iPhone SE 4 (likely in the first half of 2025) and potentially one of the iPhone 17 models by the end of the year, most likely the iPhone 17 Air.
Modem Features: Codenamed “V59” or “Centauri”, the new modem is designed to handle not just 5G, but also Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and GPS, with a focus on reducing battery consumption, especially in Low Power Mode.
Performance vs Qualcomm: While Apple’s modem is energy-efficient, it’s still behind Qualcomm in performance and lacks support for mmWave 5G (the fastest 5G speed).
Why It Matters:
The new modem will help Apple cut costs and provide more energy-efficient connectivity, especially for devices like the Apple Watch. However, it's unlikely to be featured in flagship iPhones (like the Pro models) just yet, given the current performance gaps.
The wait for Apple’s own 5G modem is almost over, starting with the iPhone SE 4 in 2025.
