1. Apple Unveils New iPad Mini

Apple has officially launched the latest generation of the iPad mini, now powered by the A17 Pro chip, the same as the iPhone 15 Pro. The new iPad mini promises enhanced performance and capabilities, priced at $499 for 128 GB of storage—double what was offered previously at the same price.

Here are all kinds of smaller tidbits worth noting about the new device:

Performance Boost:
The A17 Pro chip delivers a CPU up to 30% faster than the A15 Bionic in the previous model and a GPU up to 25% faster.

Design: While the overall design remains similar to its predecessor, new color options include vibrant blue and purple. A new magnetic charging area on the side allows for seamless pairing and charging of the Apple Pencil Pro.

Connectivity Upgrades
: The new iPad mini now supports Wi-Fi 6E, enhancing wireless performance beyond the Wi-Fi 6 offered in its predecessor. Bluetooth networking has also been upgraded.

Faster Data Transfer: It features a USB-C port for charging and data transfer, supporting speeds up to 10 Gbps—double the 5 Gbps of the previous model.

Photography Enhancements
: The new mini, with the A17 Pro chip, offers Smart HDR 4 for improved photo quality, while the previous model only supported Smart HDR 3.

Apple Pencil Support: The new iPad mini is compatible with the Apple Pencil Pro and the standard Apple Pencil with USB-C, but not the Apple Pencil 2. It introduces Pencil Hover, allowing for new gesture controls when hovering over the display.

Apple Intelligence: It will ship with iOS 18, and the first Apple Intelligence features, such as Writing Tools and Reduce Interruptions focus mode, are expected to arrive with the iOS 18.1 update later this month.

My Take
: The iPad mini's updates, though incremental, help keep the device feeling modern. If you're thinking about upgrading, these enhancements are definitely worth considering.

The iPad mini is available for order now, with deliveries set to begin on October 23. You can choose between Wi-Fi and cellular configurations, starting at $499 and $649 for 128 GB. It can be configured up to 512 GB of storage.

2. Future iPhones will have up to 12GB of memory

This year’s iPhone 16 lineup is equipped with 8GB of RAM to support Apple Intelligence features, but future models may see a jump to 12GB. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has indicated that the iPhone 17 Pro Max will likely include this upgrade, and both iPhone 18 Pro models will follow suit.

The 8GB RAM in the iPhone 16 models is essential for running Apple Intelligence features. This is a notable improvement from last year’s models, where the standard and Plus versions had 6GB while only the Pro and Pro Max had 8GB. This marks the first time Apple has used RAM as a differentiator between its Pro models.

Looking further ahead, reports suggest that at least one iPhone 18 model will adopt a new chip packaging method, enabling 12GB RAM. The upcoming 2nm A20 processor in 2026 will utilize this advanced packaging technique. TSMC, Apple's chipmaker, is pioneering this approach, which integrates CPU, GPU, and RAM into a single unit, enhancing efficiency and performance.

While it’s unclear which 2026 models will receive the RAM boost, Kuo's analysis suggests that the new packaging process will likely be reserved for the Pro versions, though non-Pro models could also feature 12GB RAM in their respective configurations. Stay tuned for more updates on Apple’s advancements!

3. Apple's smart glasses and AirPods with cameras may launch in 2027

According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, Apple is developing smart glasses and AirPods with cameras, which are expected to launch by 2027. These products will leverage the technology developed for the Apple Vision Pro.

Apple aims to recoup its multi-billion dollar R&D investment in Apple Vision Pro's visual intelligence by incorporating the technology into more products. Following the introduction of the iPhone 16’s camera control, the next step is reportedly to develop a glass form factor.

The smart glasses will feature built-in cameras, speakers, and mics but will not be full AR devices—similar to Meta's popular Ray-Ban glasses, which are priced at $299.

Apple is also exploring AirPods with cameras, though the appeal of this design remains unclear. Despite potential concerns, Apple continues to experiment with these new visual intelligence features.

4. Apple's iPhone sales soared in Q3, nearly topping Samsung

Apple will release its official quarterly earnings on October 31, and early reports suggest it will have much to celebrate regarding iPhone sales. According to research firm Canalys, iPhone shipments achieved their best Q3 ever, coming close to overtaking Samsung for the global sales lead.

With these strong Q3 results, Apple is poised for an even bigger holiday season ahead. Canalys remains a trusted source for global tech sales data, and its latest report highlights the iPhone's remarkable performance this past quarter.

Global smartphone shipments grew 5% year over year, but not all companies benefited equally. Samsung, the leader in smartphone shipments, saw its market share shrink. Last year, in Q3, Samsung held a 21% market share compared to Apple’s 17%. Both companies are at 18% this year, with Samsung retaining a slight edge.

Apple's strong performance was driven by robust sales of the iPhone 15 and earlier models. With the launch of the iPhone 16 and the upcoming Apple Intelligence, the company has significant potential to build on this success as we head into Q4.

If Apple Intelligence meets expectations, it could become a key driver for iPhone 16 sales, setting the stage for a strong holiday quarter.
