1. Apple October Event: What to Expect

Two of the four iPhone 16 models have secured spots in Tom's Guide's best smartphone battery life rankings.

To qualify for this list, a smartphone must last over 14 hours of wireless web browsing on 5G at a brightness of 150 nits. A total of 15 smartphones meet this benchmark.

The iPhone 16 Pro Max claimed 3rd place with a battery life of 18 hours and 6 minutes, while the iPhone 16 Plus took 8th place with 16 hours and 29 minutes.

Here’s the complete lineup:

  1. Asus ROG Phone 8 Pro: 18:48
  2. OnePlus 12R: 18:42
  3. iPhone 16 Pro Max: 18:06
  4. Asus Zenfone 11 Ultra: 17:52
  5. OnePlus 12: 17:41
  6. Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra: 16:45
  7. Samsung Galaxy S24 Plus: 16:32
  8. iPhone 16 Plus: 16:29
  9. Motorola Edge Plus (2023): 15:47
  10. Moto G Stylus 5G (2024): 15:01
  11. Nothing Phone 2a: 15:00
  12. Google Pixel 9 Pro XL: 14:37 (tie)
  13. Motorola Razr (2024): 14:37 (tie)
  14. Moto G 5G (2024): 14:36
  15. Nothing Phone 2: 14:21

The iPhone 16 saw an improvement in battery life, lasting 12 hours and 43 minutes compared to the iPhone 15's 11 hours and 5 minutes.

Despite the iPhone 16 Pro lasting 14 hours and 7 minutes, it didn't make the "best phone battery life" list, which is odd since it exceeded 14 hours. This is especially impressive next to the iPhone 15 Pro's 10 hours and 53 minutes. Overall, Apple is clearly making strides in battery efficiency.

2. Everything to know about the upcoming AirPods Pro 3

Apple has launched new AirPods 4 and AirPods Max models, along with updates for AirPods Pro 2. However, AirPods Pro 3 won’t be released this year, with 2025 likely as the target window.
Apple typically launches new AirPods in the fall, as seen with previous generations in September and October. While an earlier release is possible, fall 2025 aligns with Apple's historical pattern.

What will be new in AirPods Pro 3?

New Design
The AirPods Pro 3 will feature a new design, marking the first change since the original model in 2019. While the current design is well-loved, Apple aims to refine it based on customer feedback, resulting in subtle updates rather than radical changes.

Supercharged by H3 Chip

The new H3 chip is expected to bring significant improvements, following the enhancements seen with the H2 chip in AirPods Pro 2. This upgrade is anticipated to enhance audio quality and introduce new features that weren’t possible with the older H1 chip in the AirPods Max.

Health Features

Reports suggest AirPods Pro 3 may include health-related features, such as hearing tests and temperature sensing via the ear canal. These capabilities could position AirPods as valuable health tools, similar to the Apple Watch.
Cameras and AI Integration

There are speculations about incorporating cameras for potential AI tasks, allowing AirPods Pro 3 to communicate with the iPhone for enhanced features.

Audio Quality Improvements

With the H3 chip, audio quality is expected to improve further, building on the advancements made in AirPods Pro 2. Features like Noise Cancellation and Adaptive Transparency should also see enhancements, leading to a better listening experience overall.

My take: Apple typically refreshes its products more frequently, but the AirPods Pro have followed a three-year cycle. The AirPods Pro 2 offered significant upgrades over the original model, and we can expect similar enhancements with the upcoming AirPods Pro 3, likely debuting in fall 2025.

3. These Apple products will be discontinued in October

Apple is set to hold its next keynote in October, focusing on the iPad and Mac. This event will likely mark the end of availability for several older products.

M3 MacBook Pros
New 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros are expected, featuring M4, M4 Pro, and M4 Max chips, while maintaining the current design. The base model may start with 16GB of RAM and possibly come in Space Black instead of Space Gray.

M2 Mac mini
A major redesign of the Mac mini is anticipated, introducing a smaller form factor and front-facing ports. This update will shift from the current M2 and M2 Pro chips to the new M4 and M4 Pro.

M3 iMac
The iMac is also expected to be updated to the M4 chip, with minor enhancements. The Magic Keyboard, Mouse, and Trackpad will likely transition from Lightning to USB-C.

iPad mini 6
After three years, the iPad mini is set for an update, featuring the A18 chip, support for Apple Pencil Pro, a new display to address jelly scrolling, and 128GB of storage on the base model.

iPad 10?
Conflicting rumors surround the base model iPad's release. While some suggest a spring launch, others indicate that new, lower-end iPads may debut in October. If Gurman’s insights are accurate, the iPad 10 could be phased out for the 11th generation model.

4. A new iPhone SE with Face ID and updated iPad Air will launch early next year

Apple is set to update its entry-level iPhone SE and iPad Air early next year, as reported by Bloomberg's Mark Gurman.

The new iPhone SE will feature a significant redesign, moving to an all-screen format with Face ID, replacing the outdated forehead and chin bezels. It will adopt the industrial design of the iPhone 14, utilizing a notch for the camera and Face ID sensors.

For the first time, the SE is expected to have an OLED display, although it will likely retain a single rear camera. The device is anticipated to be powered by the A18 chip, enabling support for new Apple Intelligence features, marking the end of the iconic iOS home button across Apple’s lineup.

The updated iPad Air will keep its existing chassis design but focus on internal improvements. Although details on the chip remain unclear, the new models, codenamed J607 for the 11-inch and J637 for the 13-inch, are expected to enhance performance.

Additionally, Apple plans to update the keyboard accessories, likely incorporating features from the iPad Pro Magic Keyboard, such as a function row and a larger, more usable trackpad.

These product updates will kick off Apple’s 2025 lineup, with expectations for an October event to unveil new M4 Macs, including updates to the MacBook Pro, iMac, and Mac mini, likely available for sale in November.

5. AirPods will detect heart disease

9to5Mac recently discovered evidence in iOS 18 that Apple is testing using future AirPods models to measure heartbeat. The feature will be implemented in both AirPods Pro 3 and the next generation of Powerbeats Pro.

An Apple patent application describes how the Apple can use a health sensor not just to measure heart-rate, but also to detect heart disease. It describes how microphones inside the ear canal could be used to identify pointers to "heart pathology," aka heart disease.

A wearable device with a microphone can detect heart activity and identify potential heart pathologies using a predictive algorithm. The microphone signal may be processed to filter out infrasound or ultrasound signals, enabling the detection of heartbeats and blood flow.

At the most basic level, bradycardia (abnormally low heart rate) and tachycardia (abnormally high heart rate) could be detected. But more sophisticated detection can also be achieved.

The device compares two heart activities by assessing differences in strength and timing. It may use an artificial neural network to detect carotid artery blockage based on these comparisons.

AirPods Pro 3 are expected to launch next year, with Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman indicating that these will include health sensors.

6. The new Apple Vision Pro will feature the M5 chip and AI support

Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo reports that a new generation of Apple Vision Pro headsets is set to begin production in late 2025. The updated model will feature the M5 chip, significantly improving performance over the M2 in the first-gen headset, while keeping the overall design and specs similar.

It remains unclear if Apple will introduce Apple Intelligence features to the first-gen headset, but code references suggest that integration is underway. The new Vision Pro aims to enhance user experience with the upgraded processing power of the M5 chip.

Despite the improvements, the price of the M5 Vision Pro is expected to stay around $3,499, consistent with the first-generation model.
