🔥 Apple will introduce iPhone Air in 2025

In late July, evidence emerged that Apple is working on a new slim model for late 2025 and that this will replace the Plus model in the range. In other words, there will still be four handsets: 17, 17 Pro, 17 Pro Max, and the new 17 Slim.

Whereas the current standard models range from a thickness of 7.8mm (iPhone 15 and 15 Plus) to 8.25mm (15 Pro and 15 Pro Max), and the equivalent 17-series handsets should be roughly the same, the slimline iPhone 17 model is expected to have a thickness of just 5mm.

The slim model is expected, to get a non-Pro A19 processor and a single rear-facing camera lens, neither of which suggest it’s targeted at the pro end of the market.

According to the rumors, The slim model isn't intended to be a premium performance model at all, but rather it will be marketed in the same way as the original MacBook Air, prioritizing form over function.

Most rumors say it will have weaker specs than the iPhone 17 Pro generation and a lesser camera system, but will be slimmer and lighter.

According to the reports, new model will not be called the iPhone 17 Slim at all, but rather the iPhone 17 Air. And based on Apple’s other products, the Air moniker makes sense.Newsletter Partner

🚨2026 will be the year of the foldable for Apple

According to a variety of reporting, two foldable devices are in the works: a next-gen iPhone and a Mac/iPad hybrid.

Ming-Chi Kuo and Ross Young have both reported that Apple is developing an 18.8-inch all-screen foldable device. The targeted release date is 2026.

It's been referred to at various points as a MacBook, an iPad, or a Mac/iPad hybrid. So what is it? And if it is a hybrid device, will it run macOS or iPadOS?

It seems highly unlikely that Apple would dedicate significant resources in the next couple years to work on:

  • Creating a brand new OS for an all-screen hybrid, or
  • Making macOS touch-friendly so it can run on the new device

However, Apple's main software priority for the next couple years is undoubtedly Apple Intelligence. The company has already allocated significant resources into this efforts so major new initiatives like the above are highly unlikely.

As a result, this foldable will run iPadOS, and be an iPad, not a Mac.

A foldable, all-screen iPad would look like a MacBook when folded shut. It would need a protective aluminum body like a MacBook has. But on the inside, it would be all iPad.

We could be wrong here, but a foldable iPad makes a lot more sense than an all-screen foldable Mac.

Because an all-screen Mac is simply not a product Mac users want. Whereas the iPad has always been touch-first, and it’s always been all-screen. A foldable version could take the iPad to the next level.

An all-screen foldable iPad would represent a huge step forward…and come with a premium price tag as a result.

An M4 iPad Pro with 1TB of storage (and thus more RAM and CPU cores) comes out to $1,899. Add a Magic Keyboard and you’re at $2,250. We could absolutely see a foldable 18.8-inch iPad start at $2,499, with higher storage tiers in the $3,000 range.

⌚️Next Apple Watch SE will be kids friendly

The next-generation Apple Watch SE will feature a chassis made from a hard plastic material, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reiterated in this week's Power On newsletter.

The next-generation ‌Apple Watch SE‌ models will use a rigid plastic material instead of aluminum. Plastic can keep costs down, and could appeal to parents who are looking for an Apple Watch for their children.

Apple in July launched a new campaign that encourages parents to purchase a cellular Apple Watch for their children.

The "Apple Watch For Your Kids" campaign highlights the benefits of Apple Watch for younger wearers, such as location tracking, options for calling parents, and activity tracking.

Parents can set up watches for their kids with their own iPhone, and there are features for keeping it from being used during school.

With plastic, Apple could also offer the ‌light weight Apple Watch SE‌ in a range of fun colors that are not possible with aluminum. Apple used to sell a plastic ‌iPhone‌ 5c, for example, and it came in vibrant blue, yellow, pink, and green colors.

It will also differentiate the ‌Apple Watch SE‌ from the standard Apple Watch models as the current ‌Apple Watch SE‌ is basically a modified version of the aluminum Apple Watch without the latest features.

The current ‌Apple Watch SE‌ models sell for $250, but shifting to plastic may allow Apple to offer the device at a lower price to better compete with companies that offer more affordably priced smart watches.

The ‌Apple Watch SE‌ could be refreshed as soon as this year.

🚨 Everything New in iOS 18 Beta 5

In the latest iOS 18 beta 5 update, Apple introduces several notable enhancements:

Photos App Redesign: Apple has revamped the Photos app based on tester feedback. The carousel for swiping through Collections has been removed, simplifying the app's design. Users will now see more grid images at once and can scroll to access Collections. Albums are featured higher up, and Recently Saved content is integrated into Recent Days. Customization tools for Collections remain.

Distraction Control in Safari: A new feature lets users hide distracting elements on webpages, like sign-in windows and autoplay videos. This option, found in Safari’s webpage settings, hides static elements but not ads. Hidden elements need to be managed on each device separately.

Home Screen Options: A new "Edit Pages" option allows users to delete or hide entire Home Screen pages more easily through a clearer interface.

Dark Mode Updates: Apple has redesigned icons for Maps and Find My in Dark Mode. The Maps icon is now simplified, and the Find My icon features more distinct rings in green shades.

Dark Mode Search: App icons now display correctly in Dark Mode when using the search interface, resolving previous inconsistencies with Light Mode icons.

💰$20B+ Google loss for Apple? Just a tiny blip in its Services surge

If you carry out a web search by typing your query into the integrated Safari bar, that search will be carried out on Google. That's because Google pays Apple approximately $20B each year to be the default Search Engine.

It's a great deal for Google to get a huge amount of its search traffic from Apple users, and the ability to place ads in front of them. Apple customers are also a particularly valuable demographic for advertisers.

It's also a great deal for Apple because it’s free money. They have to set a default, and Google is the best-known search engine, so they’d probably do it anyway.

The judge in this case ruled that, yes, Google's anticompetitive behavior is indeed illegal. Google used illegal practices to allow it to maintain a near-monopoly in web search. Top of the list here was the annual payment to Apple, meaning that other search engines were severely disadvantaged.

The only way Google could right the wrong is by ceasing to make the payments.

If so, Apple would lose more than $20B a year from its Services revenue. If we take the one known year as an example, here are the figures for 2022:

  • Apple’s total Services revenue: $78.13B
  • Google’s payment: $20B
  • Remaining revenue: $58.13B

That’s a sizeable hit, accounting for around a quarter of the total. But when you're a company worth trillions, then it’s kind of a case of ‘twenty billion here, twenty billion there, pretty soon it starts adding up to real money.’

Apple last year made $85B from Services, so if it loses the Google payment, it’s a setback, sure – but aside from a one-off recalibration, it isn’t going to change that upward trajectory. So Apple would like to keep Google’s $20B a year, sure – but it won’t be left hurting without it.
