Poll of the week

🔍 Google struggles to boost Search Traffic on its iPhone Apps

  • Google struggles to shift iPhone searches to its apps, reaching a low adoption rate of 30%, as antitrust concerns loom over the Safari partnership.
  • According to the reports, progress in shifting iPhone users to Google apps is slower than expected.
  • As Google awaits a ruling on the U.S. Department of Justice's antitrust lawsuit, its arrangement with Apple is threatened. The current agreement, which makes Google the default search engine on Safari for iPhones, could be in jeopardy if the judge rules against Google.
  • In 2023, Google reportedly paid over $20 billion to Apple to maintain its status as the default search engine on Safari. By shifting more users to its apps, Google aims to reduce these payments and gain leverage in future negotiations.
  • If Google loses the case, it could potentially lose access to approximately 70% of searches conducted on iPhones, which account for about half of the smartphones in the U.S.
  • This outcome could impact Google's mobile search advertising revenue, which exceeded $207 billion in 2023.
  • Over the past five years, Google has increased the percentage of iPhone searches conducted through its apps from 25% to the low 30s.
  • While this represents progress, it falls short of Google's internal target of 50% by 2030.
  • The company has employed various marketing strategies, including campaigns showcasing features like Lens image search and improvements to the Discover feed. Despite these efforts, Safari's preinstalled status on iPhones remains an obstacle.

🚨Everything New in iOS 18 Beta 3

Apple has just dropped iOS 18 and iPadOS 18's third beta, refining several key areas:

  • Dark Mode Icons: More third-party apps now sport ‌Dark Mode‌ icons, which are auto-applied for those with colorful logos.
  • Photos App: Apple added a Select button for choosing multiple images to the main ‌Photos‌ interface, so there is no longer a need to swipe down to get to the Select button.
  • Emoji: Messages combines emoji, Memoji, and stickers into a single, navigable interface at the bottom.
  • Wallpaper: A dynamic ‌iOS 18‌ wallpaper adjusts color with the time of day.
  • Flashlight Interface: Enhanced controls for brightness and spread in the Flashlight feature.
  • Maps: Tweaked icon colors in ‌Dark Mode‌.
  • RCS in Messages: RCS setup in Settings now includes additional info on data usage and network sharing with carriers.
  • Apple Intelligence: Code hints at upcoming AI features like Genmoji and Image Playground.

🏚️ Latest tvOS beta points to long-rumored Apple home hub

  • Apple's plans to launch a new home device have been further backed up by discovering a hidden touchscreen interface in tvOS 18 beta 3.
  • Now, in tvOS 18 developer beta 3, a hidden interface is reportedly called PlasterBoard. It's a system interface, like the iPhone's SpringBoard, and significantly, it is for a touchscreen.
  • HomePods already run on a version of tvOS, so it makes sense that a new model will come with a screen.
  • The hidden lock screen was first spotted by 9to5mac, which also recently uncovered references in code to an as-yet-unannounced HomeAccessory17,1 device.

🏚️ Next-gen HomePod will change everything about Siri

  • There have been rumors of a HomePod with a screen for a while now, which are heating up.
  • Apple's competitors, Amazon and Google, already have smart speakers with screens. A screen would make the HomePod more versatile, and Apple is well-positioned to create a great interface because of its experience with iPads and iPhones.
  • The most likely OS for the HomePod would be tvOS because users typically interact with the HomePod from a distance.
  • A new HomePod with a screen which could potentially influence Siri in a couple of ways:
  • Shift interaction methods: The screen would allow users to interact with Siri through touch and voice commands. This might be useful in situations where voice isn't ideal.
  • Premium Siri experience: The rumored HomePod with a screen is expected to be a high-end product with a powerful processor. This could allow Siri on the device to be more advanced than the standard HomePod.

🚨 iPhone 16 to feature 'design changes' for Face ID

  • Apple is reportedly changing the Face ID design for the iPhone 16 lineup this year.
  • Rumour has it that the Pro models could feature an under-screen Face ID system
  • Although information about the new design is still being revealed, rumors suggest this change has already impacted Apple's supply chain partners.

🥴 You can prevent motion sickness with iOS 18

  • In iOS 18, Apple added Vehicle Motion Cues, an accessibility feature to prevent motion sickness when using an iPhone or iPad.
  • According to Apple, research shows motion sickness is commonly caused by a sensory conflict between what a person sees and feels. This can prevent some users from comfortably using ‌‌an iPhone‌‌ or ‌‌iPad‌‌ while riding in a moving vehicle.
  • Vehicle Motion Cues are designed to avoid this sensory conflict by using visual elements on the display that indicate real-time changes in motion.
  • In this in-depth article, we have explained everything you need to know about Vehicle Motion Cues, from how to turn it on to how to use it.
